While pharmacists have had the formal, academic path to prepare for their profession, pharmacy technicians have not had consistent educational resources. However, in the past few years, several changes have taken place that are bringing forth a trusted, reliable, consistent educational pathway that pharmacy professionals can depend on for technician competency.

The Joint Commission of Pharmacy Practitioners released its Pharmacists’ Patient Care Process in 2014, establishing the patient-centric care model. This document had an open review period from late 2024 into early 2025. We expect to see a stronger inclusion for pharmacy technicians as a pharmacy team member for patient-centric care in early 2026.
