The Intersection of Artificial Intelligence and Smartphones

In the not-too-distant past, smartphones, apps, and related tools were commonly covered topics in this space. However, it’s been several years since those topics were specifically addressed here. During those recent years, artificial intelligence has — understandably — been a topic of focus. Yet smartphones and apps have only grown in relevance to both our everyday and professional lives. Our patients, too, have become avid smartphone users. Considering the near ubiquity of smartphones and the rapidly increasing role of artificial intelligence, we are going to explore the intersection of smartphones and artificial intelligence (AI).

As of 2023, smartphone adoption in the United States reached near-universal levels, with 92% of American adults owning a smartphone, compared to 35% in 2011. This widespread adoption spans all age groups, with the 18–29 and 30–49 age groups reporting 95% adoption. Adoption rates among those aged 50–64 shows a modest decline to 92%. Potentially a surprise, 76% of seniors aged 65 and older report smartphone ownership. Across all age groups, while there is variability in users’ interest and proficiency in maximizing their use of smartphones, these adoption rates paint a very clear picture that almost every adult we interact with possesses a smartphone.
